To boldly go... to jail

Receiving transmission from Boing Boing: A lot of kids around my age got an itch to become an astronaut after watching the moon landings; I'm guessing that none of us, however, thought that we'd ever go on an entirely different sort of "mission". The thing about the diapers is especially disturbing; how long does it take to run into the bathroom while you're stopping for gas? Ick.

I saw that this morning and just shook my head. I thought astronauts when through a whole slew of tests, including psych profiles and the like, to screen out ones who would do things like this. Ah well, I guess anyone can snap. But the diaper thing, eeew.

That was one of the points that Tom Wolfe made in The Right Stuff: that the first group, the Mercury 7, went through all of these physical and psychological tests--and most of them were veteran test pilots that had already proven their mettle--only to be stuck in a tin can with very little control over their flight. Looks like standards have slipped.

And who wants to sit there stinking and marinating in waste products? Just WRONG

Well, certainly not me. (But, thanks to the ever-unfolding wonder that is the Internet, we know that they're out there.)

Is this the first time an astronaut's gotten into this sort of mess?

(No, I don't count Buzz Aldrin. The guy he punched out had it coming.)

The Orlando Sentinel article sez, "Her arrest may be the first-ever felony charges filed on an active-duty astronaut, according to the space agency." Active duty. Interesting wording, that.

Buzz Aldrin: Two-Fisted Astronaut!

Yeah, moon-hoax-conspiracy types drive me nuts. I've got a story idea related to that; I should just sit down and write the sucker.

Do that. If it's comics-script format, let me know when you're done.
