There and back again
Dec. 3rd, 2006 01:40 amWell, I decided to try to brave the inclement weather and see if I could get to the grocery store. After spending the better part of an hour trying to get my car over a big snow drift in back of it, then trying to get it back in the parking space once it became clear that I wasn't getting out--I had no shovel of any sort or anything for traction, save for a couple of old throw rugs--I set out on foot.
It's a bit less than a two-mile round trip to the local Kroger/K-Mart plaza and back. I made it there and back with slipping and falling on my ass just the once, which was tricky coming back because night had fallen and the packed-snow-turned-ice was as slippery as wet glass in some places. I was inspired by the example of myself as a kid in rural Wisconsin--I delivered newspapers in this sort of weather when my age was still in single digits--although I probably weighed about a third of what I do now back then. And I have a small shovel--really a folding camping shovel, it was all that was left on the shelves, but at least I can dig the car wheels out--and a bag of kitty litter for traction.
